Abstrakt: Tento článek je druhou částí článku, který se zabývá problémem rozlišení mezi aktivní a pasivní eutanazií. První část článku se zaměřovala na to, jakým způsobem je možné deskriptivně rozlišit mezi zabitím a ponechám zemřít a následně mezi aktivní a pasivní eutanazií. Tato druhá část předpokládá, že mezi zabitím a ponecháním zemřít existuje deskriptivně platné rozlišení a následně se zabývá jeho etickým významem. Článek se dělí na dvě části. V první části jsou podrobně popsány etické teorie tří významných filosofů – Jamese Rachelse, Michaela Tooleyho a Grahama Oddieho – se zaměřením na důvody, jež je vedly k odmítnutí etické asymetrie mezi zabitím a ponecháním zemřít. Druhá část článku nabízí kritické hodnocení teze morální symetrie a argumentuje ve prospěch jejího odmítnutí a přijetí její negace. Článek uzavírám tvrzením, že mezi zabitím a ponecháním zemřít skutečně existuje morální asymetrie a ipso facto tedy existuje i mezi aktivní a pasivní eutanazií.
Abstract: This is the second part of the paper dealing with the problem of distinguishing between active and passive euthanasia. The first part of the paper focused on the problem of how to draw a descriptive distinction between killing and letting die and consequently between active and passive euthanasia. This second part of the paper presupposes that there is a descriptively valid distinction between killing and letting die and goes on to enquire into its ethical relevance.
The article is divided into two parts. In the first part the ethical theories regarding killing and letting die of three leading philosophers – James Rachels, Michael Tooley and Graham Oddie – are described in detail with a special emphasis on their grounds for rejecting the ethical asymmetry between killing and letting die. The second part of this article offers a critical evaluation of the thesis of moral symmetry between killing and letting die and makes a case for rejecting it and accepting its negation. The conclusion of the article states that there is indeed a moral asymmetry between killing and letting die and ipso facto between active and passive euthanasia.
